What is Left Behind, 2025

Hardwick wool, thread and wooden chair

‘What Is Left Behind’ explores the quiet, persistent traces that remain after human presence fades. At the centre of the installation is an aged wooden chair; an object shaped by countless unknown interactions, now overtaken by a dense network of grey, fibrous growth. These organic, root-like forms weave across the walls and floor, enveloping the chair as though slowly reclaiming it. The work reflects on the accumulation of memory, residue, and emotional imprint. The chair becomes a stand-in for the body, and the sprawling material suggests what lingers in our absence: the fragments we shed, the histories we carry, and the subtle ways places hold onto the people who once inhabited them. Resting on delicate, transparent cups, the chair appears both preserved and precarious, caught between protection and decay. This suspension underscores the tension between holding on and letting go, between the desire to preserve the past and the inevitability of its transformation.
