Limen, 2024

Steel structure with knitted steel forms and projections (213.5 x 122 cm)

‘Limen’ explores the threshold between material and immaterial worlds, drawing its inspiration from the quiet, suspended atmospheres of cave environments. At the centre of the installation hangs a delicate sculptural form, an airy column of mesh that evokes geological drapery, mineral deposits, and the slow, textural growth of subterranean spaces. Its porous structure suggests both fragility and endurance, echoing the way caves form through processes of accumulation, dissolution, and time. Surrounding this form are moving light projections created through a camera-less photographic process, in which water was placed directly onto light-sensitive paper. The resulting images; luminous patterns of ripples, refractions, and shifting densities and capture the behaviour of water as both a transformative force and a carrier of memory. Projected across the installation, they animate the sculpture from within and dissolve the boundaries between object, surface, and atmosphere. Together, these elements form a liminal environment: a space poised between solidity and fluidity, dark and light, interior and exterior. The work invites viewers to enter a moment of suspended perception, where the cave becomes not just a physical site but a metaphor for thresholds; places where vision slows, senses heighten, and the familiar becomes otherworldly.
