‘Conversations’ draws inspiration from Davies’ African heritage and her spiritual reflections on the cyclical nature of life and death. In many African traditions, the dead are believed to remain active within the world of the living, shaping daily life and offering guidance. Davies explores this ongoing connection, reflecting on how ancestors are honoured and how their presence continues to resonate across generations. The copper-green tones and stone-like textures recall the reliquary figures she encountered in childhood, sacred objects that safeguarded memory and embodied ancestral presence. The cratered, weathered surfaces of the ceramics echo oxidised metal and eroded mineral forms, giving each piece the appearance of having undergone long processes of transformation. This material language suggests both decay and renewal, reinforcing the work’s meditation on time, continuity, and spiritual endurance. While abstract, each vessel subtly evokes the human figure. Their irregular silhouettes, slight leanings, and organic proportions gesture toward bodies in quiet communion. Arranged together, the pieces resonate with a sense of collective presence; a gathering of forms that appear to be engaged in a wordless dialogue. Through this fusion of material experimentation and cultural memory, ‘Conversations’ becomes a reflection on transformation and ancestry. It invites viewers to consider the unseen exchanges between past and present, as well as the enduring conversations that shape identity, belonging, and the cycle of life.
